Important information for the visistors in season 2020

In 2018 the Vimperk castle entered the reconstruction project IROP: The Upper Castle Vimperk (Winterberg). The works will last until the end of 2020 and for their duration the tours and cultural events will be substantially limited.

In 2020 the castle tours will be limited on the period from July to September and only the tour Lower Castle will be opened for visitors.

Opening Hours

In 2020 the castle will be opened for visitors from July to September.

Opening hours in July and August:

Monday closed
Tue – Sun 10:00 – 16:00

The castle will be opened also on Monday, July 6 (public holiday). The closing day is moved on Tuesday, July 7.

The beginnings of the tour: 10:00, 10:45, 11:30, 12:15, 13:00, 13:45, 14:30, 15:15, 16:00.

Tourist limitations related to the reconstruction project

During the time of a reconstruction (2018 – 2020) the tourist services will be in a provisional mode and they will take several limitations - see below. The castle administration apologizes for the limitations and inconveniences, but they are an inevitable cost for the possibility at least partially see the castle during the reconstruction.


There will be no toilet with running water available at the castle during the reconstruction. Please use the portable toilets on the parking lot in front of the castle, which will be placed there from July to the end of September 2020.

Ticket office

The castle will be opened without a ticket office. The entrance fee will be collected by the guide before the tour begins. Therefore the payment can be made only in cash. Only Czech crowns will be accepted!

Souvenir shop

No souvenirs will be sold at the castle during the time of a reconstruction. If you are interested in buying postcards and other souvenirs, we recommend you to visit the tourist office located on the main square in the city centre.

Entrance to the castle courtyards

The castle courtyards will be closed for a safety reasons. The only possibility to enter the castle is with a guide on a guided tour.


Key2Sights or Klíč k památkám is a special loyalty bonus for visitors of a certain Czech sights and monuments. On any of the sights held by the National Heritage Institute (and many others) you can ask for you "loyalty card" and collect the entrances. After visiting five of the sights included in the program in one year, you can visit the sixth sight for free.

If visiting the Vimperk castle, please take into consideration that there will be certain limitations for the program. For a technical reasons there will not be a possibility to use your card to get the sixth entrance for free. However you can ask for a new card registration and we will be also able to register your second to fifth entrance on your card.

Collectors tickets

In 2018 the National Heritage Institute introduces the new collection of entrance tickets, complemented by the Collectors Diary (Zápisník návštěvníka památek). Until the renewal of full tourist services in 2021, the Vimperk castle will offer neither the tickets, nor the diary.

Specific limitations for visitors without knowledge of Czech language

The guided tours are only in Czech. Because of operating reasons there is no English text or translation available until 2021! We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you are organizing a trip of a larger group and you are interested in tour with an English speaking guide, please contact the castle administration. We will try to find a solution for you. Nevertheless it may happen that because of the ongoing reconstruction we will not be able to offer you any service in English or other foreign languages.
